Kids are cool. Way cool. Cooler than us, in fact. Yeah sure they spit up on themselves and sometimes have trouble with the whole concept of indoor plumbing but overall they rock. You wanna know why? Here’s a quick recap of the coolest human beings on Earth.
They have no filters, no screens telling them not to say silly things or not talk complete jibberish. They laugh at “knock knock” jokes … most of the time before the punchline. They play in dirt. They play in the rain – sometimes at the same time. They smile at complete strangers. They dance in public. They get pumped to check the mail. They want to roll down the windows and play outside when it’s 130 degrees in the shade. They are completely entertained with an empty cardboard box. They are totally fine leaving the house in their pajamas. They could eat eggos for breakfast, lunch and dinner and be satisfied. A tiny sticker totally negates any bad feelings toward a doctor that just poked them in the leg with a needle.
Whereas us adults think about every consequence. What if I say hi and smile to that person in the grocery store and they don’t say hi back? If I go out in the rain, will my makeup run? What would people think of me if I went out in public in my pajamas? Ugh, I better check the mail. I don’t even dance on a dance floor, much less in the middle of Target.
When and how do we lose this wild abandon? When do we start weighing out consequences and letting them get the best of us? Kids don’t think one second past the moment they are in. And most of them are so happy, that the happiness actually seems as though it might bubble over anytime. If you ask me, that is about the best way you can live. We don’t know anything about the next moment and most importantly it’s really not up to us anyways. Life is one big roller coaster. Some highs … some lows and then some plateaus. So let’s take a hint from these little nuggets and do what they would do. Take a deep breath, put both your hands in the air as high as you can (don’t think about your hair getting messed up) …. and enjoy the ride.
