I am sure at some point we have all swore on our pinkys in the midst of a 44 ouncer and chicken fingers that would eat healthier and treat our bodies as the temples that they are. Step one of that process: eat out less. Ok, wipe the grease off your fingers and grab your keys. Time to hit the grocery store. Sounds simple enough. Then you get to the grocery store and are bombarded 25 aisles, 6 feet tall stacked with labels screaming out at you…ZERO trans fat, 1/3 less calories than the leading brand, 50% less sodium than before. Panic sets in. It is then when we realize … eating healthy is HARD. This is one of the reasons I personally would rather have back to back root canals than go to the grocery store to overhaul my kitchen with healthy food. And then came SELF and their Healthy Food Awards.
Two great girls over at SELF Magazine, Erin Hobday and Merritt Watts made this daunting task very easy for us. And side note, they both have a TON of good stuff on SELF.com. To see more of Erin’s posts on being healthy and happy, click here. Her partner in crime, Merritt Watts puts together an awesome daily tip of the day called the Jumpstart Plan to help you stay focused on being the best healthy person you can be. Click here for a sampling of her enlighening posts.
Ok, back to the subject. These girls recruited two nutrition experts Willow Jarosh, R.D., and Stephanie Clarke, R.D., of New York City to design nutritional criteria for dozens of foods, accounting for calories, fat, sugar, fiber and more. They then found a gaggle of hungry people looking for good for you options instead of pounding another bag of Funyuns. (Don’t get me wrong, Funyuns do rock. Everything in moderation, right??) And together, they came up with this great list of 54 delicious and healthy grocery store items to make your trip to the store more enjoyable and easy.
My personal favorites from the list include Paul Newman Honey Mustard dressing, watermelon flavored Sour Patch candy and Van’s Fat Free Waffles.
Now I know in a perfect world, we could all have MOJO for breakfast, lunch and dinner. But since that is somewhat unrealistic, and you eventually have to eat at home, you can click here to see the full grocery store list of the winners from SELF’s Healthy Food Awards. And don’t forget to follow SELF on Twitter for helpful hints, recipes and just fun stuff in general!

“A day without laughter is a day wasted.”

In the age of buying anti-bacterial products by the pound, it is hard to imagine that some bacteria is actually good for you. These live bacteria filled with fabulous health benefits are called probiotics, a name that means “for life.”
What’s grosser than gross? There are over 400 types of bacteria shacking up in our gastrointestinal tract as we speak. But the good news, is that probiotics can be the “super man (or woman)” of your digestional tracks. When the “good-guys” are not present enough (maybe superman has taken a week off to party in Cabo), a number of bacteria-related health problems such as digestive upset, headaches, sluggishness, irritability, cadidiasis (an overgrowth of the bacteria Candida albicans), and even anxiety can ensue.
But have no fear, my friends, your MOJO is here! Mojo has over 2 million strains of probiotics in our froyo.
Besides giving you an instant boost of happy, here are some of the benefits of eating foods containing probiotics:
* Enhanced immune system response
* Helps to prevent eczema in youth
* Increased ability to digest food
* Reduces lactose intolerance
* Increases ability to assimilate the nutrients from food
* Alleviates many common digestive disorders such as IBS
* Increases ability to absorb calcium
* Promotes anti-tumor and anti-cancer activity in the body
And even better…. if you catch us on Facebook and Twitter, we will give you the word of the day tomorrow and you can get half off your bacteria Oops, I mean your Mojo. Enjoy!!
